Another great year for C.S.N at the B.T. Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition!!
Congratulations to Ciarán Meers, David Rasmussen & Seán O’Regan!!
Ciarán Meers has received the Special C.S.O. award for his project “An investigation into the susceptibility of areas in urban regions to processes of gentrification”
David Rasmussen & Seán O’Regan were awarded 3rd prize in their category for their project “The Circle of Life; The use of heat produced by decaying plant materials and microorganisms to increase the rate of germination in plant life.”
Congratulations again to them and to all of our students that took part in the competition. It is a great honour for them, their families and their school that their projects were chosen for the exhibition out of the thousands of applicants.
They have had an amazing week in Dublin. An experience that they will never forget.
Many thanks to Ms. A O’Mahony for accompanying the students and to Mr T. Kerins & Mr T, Healy for arranging the school visit on Thursday. Huge thanks to the students’ parents and teachers for their support and encouragement.
Another busy day for our Young Scientists.
The final round of judging took place and their were lots of visitors to the C.S.N. stands.
The boys availed of the opportunity to visit the technology stands and to visit all of the other school stands at the exhibition.
They have had a very busy week and are looking forward to the award ceremony this evening!
Best of luck to them all.
Some of our students had the opportunity to travel to the R.D.S. today to attend the B.T. Young Scientist Exhibition.
They visited all of the stands and met their C.S.N. colleagues and viewed their projects.
There were lots of amazing exhibits to visit and some of the boys tried their hand at reading a news bulletin!!
Simon Meehan the winner of the 2018 B.T. Young Scientist Prize visited Brian Donnelly, Harry O Donoghue, Senan Walsh and spoke to them about their project.
Judging continued today and the results will be announced tomorrow evening.
Best of luck to all of our students!!
Best of luck to our students taking part in this years B.T. Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.
We have 5 very varied projects representing C.S.N.
The boys have written the following overviews of their projects:
1) Title: An investigation into the susceptibility of areas in urban regions to processes of gentrification
Name: Ciarán Meers
Project Overview: The project uses data from the 2016 Census to look at a number of factors which contribute to gentrification, such as income levels and rent prices, in order to note which areas in Dublin are most likely to be subject to processes of gentrification.

2) Title: An Investigation into the Attitudes of Secondary School Students towards Irish as a Subject Compared to other Modern Languages
Names: Robert Palmer, Michael Keohane
Project Overview: This project aims to see how junior and senior students feel about Irish as a subject, and if they prefer other language subjects over Irish. The project also aims to assess their ability at the subject of Irish, as well as other language subjects.

3) Title: Investigating The Effectiveness Of The New Junior Cycle Curriculum
Names: Brian Donnelly, Harry O’Donoghue, Senan Walsh
Project Overview: In this project, we set out to investigate how effective the new Junior Cycle is. As students going through this Junior Cycle, we feel both directly involved in it and affected by it.Many people, especially teachers, have serious concerns regarding the implementation of the new curriculum. In our project we wanted to address these concerns and find out what parts are effective and what parts are not.

4) Title: Effective Water: The contrasts between Reverse Osmosis and Solar Distillation for water treatment in the 21st century
Names: Aditya Pillai, Daniel O’Reilly
Project Overview: In our project we compared two systems of water treatment to find which one could be better developed for the developing world. One of our methods involves carrying out reverse osmosis with a potato and a syringe, which could be easily done in developing nations.

5) Title: The Circle of Life; The use of heat produced by decaying plant materials and microorganisms to increase the rate of germination in plant life.
Names: David Rasmussen, Sean O’Regan
Project Overview: The aim of our project is to find a way to naturally optimize the growth of plants. To achieve this goal we analyzed the microbial environments present in compost and sought to find ways to optimize the energy produced. This was done via inserting a copper conductor inside a compost bin then connecting it into an insulated environment that we called a germination box. Inside the copper conductor was water which transported the heat produced by the compost into the germination box where the plants are located, to aid germination
Congratulations to four of our students who won “Best Robot Design” in the Qualcomm “FIRST Lego League” robot competition.
U.C.C. Department of Engineering hosted the event in the Devere Hall on the 7th December.
The competition was the culmination of weeks of problem-solving, teamwork and practical applications of science, technology and engineering and the boys rose to the challenge.
The team members were:
Oscar Kelleher, N Proinsias
Josh Heaney, N Proinsias
Maahith Malhotra, N Colm
Jason Foley, N Eoin
Well done to the team and their teachers and best of luck to the team in future competitions.
One of our past pupils, Elvis Seporaitis organised an engineering workshop for some of our T.Y. students in U.C.C.
The workshop focused mainly on Sustainable Engineering and Renewable Energy but also included guest speakers from Civil and Process and Chemical Engineering.
After they had completed the workshop the students took part in a quiz. Congratulations to the winners Andrew McElligott, Ronan Casey and Rian Foley.
The visit to U.C.C. was a great experience for the boys and will be of huge benefit to them as they try to decide on future careers.
Special thanks to Elvis for arranging the workshop. It is very much appreciated by all in C.S.N.
On Thursday 14th November three teams represented C.S.N. in the regional finals of the Irish Science Teachers’ Association Senior Science Quiz.
Matthew Harte, David Harris and Aidan Mamo Cooney finished second and have qualified for the National Finals which will be held in Dublin on Saturday 23rd November.
Congratulations and very well done to all of our students who entered the competition.
Best of luck to Matthew, David & Aidan in the National finals!
Some of our 2nd Year students travelled to Fota Wildlife Park today as part of their Science course.
Fota’s Practical Field Ecology course covers all aspects of the Biology module and also allows students time to explore the Park after completing their Woodland survey.
The boys really enjoyed the day and found it very interesting. A great way to learn about the environment.
Our First Years created models of Volcanos as part of their Geography class.
At our Open Evening on 19th September, prospective students chose their favourite and cast their votes.
The winners of the first year Volcano Competition were:
1st ) Ronan McInerney
2nd) Oran Murphy
3rd) Kieran Sisk Ravindrum.
Well done to everyone who took part in the competition. The models were fantastic and of a very high standard.
Three of our 2nd year students ,Timmy O’Riordan, Brian Donnelly & Ross O Donovan were invited to take part in the P.E.S.S. Young Scientist Event in the University of Limerick on 16th May 2019.
22 schools were invited to Limerick with 60 students in attendance.
The students were given the chance to present their B.T. Young Scientist Competition project titled “An Investigation Into The Possible Damage Caused By Parental Input From The Sideline In Field Sports”.
The students also got the chance to take part in workshops which tested their reaction speeds, hand eye coordination, jump performance and VO2 max levels.
They also had the opportunity to learn more about U.L. and the programs it has to offer.
