Literacy and Numeracy

In line with the government’s initiative to refocus on literacy and numeracy as core skills in learning, Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh has adopted a number of measures to deliver on the initiative.
Over the last year, the members of the staff Literacy Committee have been busy gathering data on our students’ reading and writing attainment and their attitudes towards these important skills. Thank you to all 1st and 2nd Year Parents who completed our Literacy Survey recently. The results, in the form of easily-read graphs, can be seen below. We have recently introduced an important assessment for learning (AfL) initiative to encourage improved standards of written work in the younger year groups. This strategy – known as OLAM – is just one of a number of action plans that we are developing as part of our School Improvement Plan for Literacy. The plan, currently in draft form, will, when approved by the school’s Board of Management, be available to parents and students on the website. A copy of the draft plan will soon be published on the website and we would welcome the views of parents and students on the strategies proposed in the plan. This coming year, along with literacy, we will also be focusing on numeracy (mathematical skills). Ms. Ward is to head-up a team which will, in due course, produce a School Improvement Plan for Numeracy. (October 2013)
