Clubs & Societies in Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh

An Cumann Díospóireachta

The Debating Society

The Debating Society is one of the longest standing clubs in Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh and the opportunity to stand up and be heard has been passed on through generations of students.

Today, the club is mainly student-run. Senior students provide mentoring and support for junior students. The club meets during lunchtime twice a week- on Tuesday a motion is announced and students can volunteer to speak the following Friday. These debates are overseen by the student-elected chairman and his counsel. This provides a fun and safe environment for students to express their ideas and practice their public speaking skills. We also run in-house competitions such as the First Year Debate, which give newcomers a chance to try it out.

Students are also encouraged to enter and participate in outside competitions such as the UCC Philosoph and local Junior Mace competitions. We have had great success over the years in competitions both in Ireland and abroad.

The Guitar Club

The Guitar Club is run every Tuesday at  lunchtime and is open to all members from beginner to proficient.

The club also allows students to learn the ukulele and is open to everyone whether they want to play or just listen.

Contact Ms. Lodge or Mr. Donovan for more information.

Trad Group

CSN Trad Group was established in September 2014 with only a handful of pupils and has grown in size each year since. We now have over thirty musicians from all the year groups. We welcome all instruments from fiddles to tin whistles, guitars to accordions and this year we are pleased to have a cello and trombone join our ensemble.

We enjoy performing at all school events from the Open Night to School Masses, Coffee Mornings to Seachtain na Gaeilge. In recent times we have also been asked to perform for a video recording for Presentation Day and at the Launch of the LEAF project. We practice at lunch every Monday and students from all year groups and of all musical abilities are welcome to join.

Our senior students lead the group and are great role models to the younger boys. It is a great way to meet new friends while learning a few tunes and keeping our rich traditional music culture alive.

Contact Ms Denise Dorgan to join our Trad Group.

Film Club

Traditionally run by our Transition Year students, the CSN Film Club is for our First Years and is held twice a week at lunchtime.

Film Club is another great way for our students to meet their classmates and meet students from other classes

Cloud of Think

Cloud of Think is Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh’s creative writing website.

The idea behind the website is to encourage the process of writing, of opinion-formation, of thought-provocation and to publish the results of that process on-line where pupils could see each other’s work and where the greater community could go to explore their ideas.

All students are encouraged to join Cloud of Think and Mr Cooney would be more than happy to explain what is involved.

Find out more about the Cloud of Think website here.

Mountaineering Club

The Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh Mountaineering Club was established in 1972 and is one of the oldest mountaineering clubs in Cork.

Students and staff organise several Sunday outings each year to various parts of Cork and Kerry.

Each year the Annual First Year Climb takes place on Mangerton and for some of our students it is the first time that they will have had the opportunity to hike. Whether there is sunshine or rain it is always a great way to finish off their first year in CSN.

Contact Mr D. Cramer for information on outings and to join our Mountaineering Club.
