This year marked the school’s return to the Corn Uí Mhuirí, Munster’s top tier Colleges Football competition, after an 11 year absence and our goal was to get out of the group in the Corn Uí Mhuirí and to get to a Simcox Cup final.
The team trained once a week throughout the summer months in preparation for the huge challenge ahead and from mid-August they trained twice a week. Our campaign got underway in the Simcox Cup in late September and this competition was set aside until later February, as the Corn Uí Mhuirí group stage approached.
We faced High School Clonmel, Hamilton High School and Coláiste Chriost Rí in the Group stages and having won all three matches we progressed to the Quarter-Final against Skibbereen Community School which we won 2-12 to 1-8.
Unfortunately on Saturday, January 28th, our great run of results came to an end in the Semi-Final in Mallow against a more experienced, stronger St. Francis College Rochestown.
But 5 days later we resumed our Simcox cup campaign in a Quarter-Final meeting with DLS Macroom and we were delighted to come away with a win and a Semi-Final place.
In the Semi-Final, we had the opportunity to meet Rochestown again, to rectify our mistakes in the Corn Uí Mhuirí and to prove to ourselves that we were capable of a better performance. This time, we managed the game better and came out on top.
The Final was against Skibbereen Community School and despite trailing at half time, CSN rallied and after an 18 year wait, the Simcox Cup was finally returning to Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh.
We would like to congratulate all the players for their commitment and hard work over a long and successful year and we look forward to another successful year with all of our Football Teams.
