The second ever Teacher’s Basketball Cup was played on Wednesday 14th May. On the baking heat of the hardcourt basketball courts, the Teachers Team took on the challenge of the 24/25 6th Year basketball selection. 

“Player of the Match”, Mr. Cullinane, set the tone from the throw in with an imperious leap and retention of the ball. A cagey opening followed in which the student team committed a series of unnecessary fouls. Some good early pressure from the student’s defence kept their basket safe, for now. After missing the backboard numerous times the students finally scored one of their many shots, a two pointer. The students thought they had managed a swift breakaway two-pointer from Darragh Byrne, but unfortunately he did not beat the half-time buzzer and the shot was too late to count. Half-Time: Students 2-0 Teachers. 

Despite having a numerical advantage and the benefit of substitutions, the students could not break down the solid Teacher defence further. Mr. Murphy showed excellent defensive prowess as he kept the Student Team’s captain Cormac Dineen from completing a threatening drive to the basket. At the other end, Ms Brosnan’s command of the key was clear, retaining offensive rebound after rebound, keeping the pressure on the students’ defence. 

Following some fantastic fluid movements from the Teachers, reminiscent of the 17/18 Golden State Warriors, Mr. Cullinane opened up unmarked near the half court line. He lined up his shot and sunk the three-pointer from downtown. This would prove the be the second and decisive score in the match. 

Mr O’Tuama, after a stellar officiating display, blew the final whistle; Teachers 3-2 Students. This rounded off what was a truly remarkable year for the Teachers of CSN completing the quadruple over the 24/25 6th Years: Basketball, Soccer, Darts, and Fantasy Football.

Commiserations to the valiant 6th Year 24/25 Team and best of luck to next year’s challengers.
