Sport at Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh

Hurling

For over four decades countless CSN hurlers have proudly represented the school in both Cork and Munster competitions at every age group.

While developing as hurlers and as young men, many moments of triumph and, at times, disappointment have been shared, and life-long friendships forged.

Among the CSN hurlers of recent times, who have gone on to achieve success at inter-county level, are Ronan Curran, Shane O’Neill, Damien Cahalane, Conor Cahalane,  Patrick Collins and Ger Collins.

In 2021 two CSN hurlers, James Byrne and Darragh O’Sullivan,  represented the school with distinction as members of the All-Ireland winning Cork hurling minor team.

Each year our TY students organise Hurling Leagues for our First Year students which helps our newest students to bond as a class and also encourages them to participate in sporting activities in CSN.

Gaelic Football

Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh has produced some of the finest sports people to represent their county, province and country over the years. Past students have represented their County at Minor, U20 and Senior Level in Gaelic Football. The School has educated and is home to many All-Ireland medal holders and is proud of this tradition.

Gaelic Football has a strong tradition in CSN. Every year, the school enters teams for Cork Colleges and Munster Colleges competitions. Along with numerous under-age successes, CSN has won the Cork Colleges Senior A (Simcox Cup) competition. In addition, CSN reached the pinnacle of Munster Colleges football in 2005 when the Corn Uí Mhuirí and Simcox Cup double was secured for the first time. Graduates from CSN are also to be seen not only wearing the Cork colours but also captaining and managing Cork teams in the past i.e Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Michael Shields and Ian Maguire. In 2018 CSN secured another historic Munster U16.5 and Cork Colleges U16 double to add to the schools rich history in Gaelic Football continuing our strong tradition developing football players to represent their clubs and county into the future.

Soccer

Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh has a strong and proud tradition in schools soccer.  Teams have participated in the F.A.I. School’s Munster/All- Ireland championships since the early 1970s and in Cork school’s championships since their inception in 1986. The school is proud of the various successes over the years which have contributed to the good spirit of the school. Among the many achievements are four All-Ireland titles, (Senior 1994, U16 1981 & 2001, U14 2008) and being All-Ireland runners-up on four occasions. Munster titles and victories in Cork championships have also featured over the years with the most recent U17 Munster title in 2019. The U14 team of 2008, as All-Ireland champions, represented the Republic of Ireland in an international tournament played in Scotland and won the bronze medal.

The first year soccer championship among our own first year classes has been a tradition going back to the 1970s and is one of the highlights of the sporting year in the school, as is the six-a-side competition for 6th year students (which includes a team made up of staff members) played in the school sports hall. These competitions generate much excitement and help to promote great spirit, a hallmark of Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh. Past pupils such as John Egan, Brian Barry-Murphy, Neal Horgan and Anthony Buckley have gone on to professional careers in soccer. John Egan currently plays for the Republic of Ireland national team and Sheffield Utd in England.

Basketball

Basketball began in Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh in the mid-eighties and is now a thriving and popular sport.

The school has won four All-Ireland titles to date. We won the under 19 competition in 1991, 1995 and 2005 and the U16 title in 2009.

The school was also named Basketball School of the Year in 2009, a year in which we reached three All-Ireland finals. More recently, we competed in the under 16 All-Ireland Cup final in 2018.

A number of Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh players have played for Irish underage teams. Every year the school fields four teams – first year, second year, under 16 and under 19.

Golf

CSN offers students the opportunity to represent the school in Golf Competitions.

Each year the school enters the Irish Schools Junior & Irish Schools Senior competitions and these are normally held in Spring.

Golf promotes skills and values such as leadership, sportsmanship, communication, self-management, respect, honesty, integrity, responsibility, perseverance and good etiquette. It is suitable for all ages and abilities.

The C.S.N. Golf society always welcomes new players so please contact Mr Greene or Mr O’Regan to join.

Sailing

Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh encourages students to represent our school in a variety of sports.

Students with an interest in sailing will represent us in the The Munster & All-Ireland Schools Team Racing Championships.

Sailing is great fun and a sport that promotes a wide range of physical and mental skills such as fitness, mental wellness, lower stress level, increased agility and concentration, improved organisation and communication skills.

Team racing is a great experience and provides a challenge in boat handling skills and communication.  Newcomers to sailing are welcome to take part as crew to try it out for themselves.

Athletics

Many of our students are involved in local Athletics Clubs and have represented CSN in County, Munster and National events.

Cross country as well as track and field events are very popular and our students have been very successful.

We have an athletics module as part of our Physical Education programme to help build resilience, boost self-esteem, increase long-term health & develop Fundamental Movement Skills.
