Our green schools committee members attended a water workshop in the Lifetime Lab during the week. They learned about the importance of access to clean water and how they can deliver this message to students in school. They made a water action plan for the school and delivered a presentation to the whole group during the workshop. Well done to Augie, Seán, Cillian and Olan.
An early start in an icy Dublin. Our boys were up with the dawn and ready for what the day would bring.

All three groups were judged by 11.00am giving the boys a chance to enjoy the shows, exhibitions and all that was on offer at the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

The boys had visits from local TDs, Jerry Buttimer and an Tánaiste Micheál Martin. The A.I. team explained to the Tánaiste how A.I. was the future and humans had a low probability of picking out A.I. generated content over human made.

The Cork underground railway group were delighted to explain to Jerry Buttimer how they would spend the Apple money. They also got a chance to explain their idea for a light railway network to the Irish Examiner and BBCs John Toal. Their interview will air on BBC Sounds NI at 11.00am on Saturday morning, 11th January. Tune in!

Our budding horticulturists were visited by TG4 and had many photo opportunities including a selfie with an Taoiseach Simon Harris. They also featured on Virgin Media News!

Round three of judging commenced at 2.00pm and all groups did very well presenting their projects.

The boys finished off their day with a well deserved trip to Dundrum shopping centre.
We are so grateful to our staff, parents and students for your very generous response to our Annual Christmas Food Appeal.

The amount of food donated was yet again phenomenal and we know that all of the contributions to the appeal brought some joy to people in our community who are struggling at Christmas time.

We also received monetary donations amounting to €1,170 for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

A special word of thanks to our T.Y. students who co–ordinated the appeal, packed all of the food items into hampers and boxes and helped to load the SVP truck.

Thank you all for your wonderful generosity and support.
Our Young Scientists successfully made the train this morning despite the inclement weather. We settled into our journey across the country through the snowy midlands preparing for the first judging at the exhibition. This abruptly ended when Iarnród Eireann made an announcement. To test our warm clothes we were all asked to get off the train in Portlaoise and were herded onto a new but much more compact train and eventually arrived in Dublin at one.

We were now racing against the clock, to get across Dublin to the RDS, set up our stands and get to the opening ceremony which started at 2.00pm. Unfortunately we were too late to hear the inspirational words of the first citizen an Uachtarán Micheal D. Higgins.

The boys quickly set up their stands and were immediately into Round 1 of judging. All teams were pleased with how this went and are now looking forward to day 2 and the next round.

Our hydroponics stand appeared behind James Patrice of “The Today Show”. Hopefully, he might interview some of our teams over the coming days.

The exhibition this year has several projects on AI, along with several on fertilisers which is probably due to the Nitrogen derogation. We noticed some dedicated to seaweed, seasonal changes, swimwear and of course Swifties!

The boys spotted some RTE celebs and there were some TDs busy making friends with teams from around the country.

Our 3 teams:

Mark Donnelly, Jacob Wallace and Pearse O’Cronín’s project:

“The CURT: A Cork Underground Rapid Transit system designed by the Physarum Polycephalum slime mould”

David Dumitrescu, Timothy Linert and Yannick Daly Trillaud’s project:

“Humans VS AI” – testing the reliability of AI detectors against humans

James Gea Duffy, Glen McGovern and Noah Sembrano’s project:

“Hydroponic Towers: Rockwool vs Earth Wool“
On Tuesday 10th December, Bishop Fintan joined students, staff, Presentation Brothers, Board of Management, P.B.S.T. and friends in Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh at a special ceremony to bless the beautiful new Crib figures, ordered from Rome, to mark the 60th anniversary of the school.  Bishop Fintan reminded us of origins of the Crib, which came from St Francis of Assisi, as a way of bringing the Christmas message to the people at that time.

Ms Brenda Moriarty welcomed Bishop Fintan and the guests to the school and said that these crib figures are a magnificent addition to our school’s Catholic tradition and living faith. Senior students, Ben Callanan, David O’Mahony, Kieran Lane Panah, Ross Downing, Matthew O’Mahony and Sam Hodgins read the scripture reading and offered prayers of intercession.

Ms Dorgan and our Trad Group performed for our guests with Samuel Okoye and Callum Scanlon singing beautiful solos and all present joined in the singing of the Christmas Carols.

The Crib is at the centre of our Christian story and at the heart of our school. It was particularly significant that we had gathered our food appeal around our crib, which will be donated to the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

We were delighted to share this occasion of joy and unity with all present. Our hope is that these figures will inspire peace, love and hope in our whole school community as we are reminded of the true spirit of the season.
1st Year N. Prn students have been practicing their letter-writing skills in English and put them to the test by sending notes to loved ones this Christmas. Cards are traveling far and wide to destinations such as India, Turkey, Germany, Italy, and plenty of local addresses too. This activity not only honed their writing abilities but also spread some festive cheer.
Many thanks to Mary and Steve from Stobbs Intangible Asset Management for their presentation to TY Mini Company and 5th Year Business students on Intellectual Property. Students learned how intellectual property that is a result of the creative process including copyright and patents, need to be considered in their business. The Tie Towel mini company made the most of the opportunity to get advice on how to trademark their brand for the Irish and EU markets.
